THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
The National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) celebrated the 70th Constitution Day on Tuesday, and also inaugurated the College Students Union 2019-20 on its campus at Akkulam on the occasion.
K Sreekumar, Mayor, Corporation of Thiruvananthapuram, inaugurated the College Union, which has a student from Nepal as Chairman and whose other members include those from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Sheeba George, Director, Social Justice Department and Executive Director, NISH, presided over the function.
In his address, Sreekumar stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights of the disabled. “The Corporation has started a project for the welfare of the disabled in concert with the city-based Magic Planet, where around 50 children selected by the Social Security Mission will be given training in various vocational skills like garment-making. We have earmarked Rs 20 lakh for this project,” he said.
The Mayor also unveiled the name of the Students Union, ‘Samskruti’, on the occasion. Its members took the oath at the function where the preamble of Indian Constitution was read out.
Dr K.G. Satheesh Kumar, Director, Centre for Assistive Technology and Innovation (CATI), NISH, welcomed the gathering. Daisy Sebastian, Academic and Early Intervention Coordinator, NISH, proposed a vote of thanks.
