KOCHI:
International Conference ‘Maricon-2019’ as part of the 80th Anniversary of the CUSAT School of Marine Sciences, was held at Lakeside Campus.
The conference, which began on December 16, was attended by more than 650 research students from various universities and research institutes around the world. At the seminar inaugurated by the Governor of Kerala Arif Muhammad Khan and held at five venues over three days. Over 450 papers were presented on various topics during Plenary and technical sessions.
Experts lead sessions with various topics like Dr Davidson Jones, University of Portsmouth, U.K on ‘Plastic pollution in the sea’, Prof. Ravi Murtha Gudde, University of Maryland,U.S.A on ‘The role of the sea in monsoon and global warming’, Dr. A. C. Danesh, Geological Survey of India, Manglore, on ‘Mineral Wealth in the Indian Ocean’, Dr Benjamin Naman, University of California, U.S.A. on ‘Marine Biosafety and Conservation Resources’, Dr Aaron Lobo, Portugal International Union of Conservation Nature, on ‘different possibilities of fishing’ and Prof. Toshio Koike of UNESCO (Japan) on ‘Use of water resources and climate change mitigation measures’.
Dr Biswas Mehtha, Additional Chief Secretary was the chief guest at the valedictory function. Prof. Toshio Koike, Prof. Aneykutty Joseph, Prof. Mohammed Hatha, Dr. P.S. Sunil spoke. A review of the various issues raised topics and solutions presented at the seminar were also held.
