  • CIAL to Launch 36-Acre Aero Park on February 9

By NE Reporter on February 4, 2026

Kochi:As part of its strategic initiative to transform Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) into an integrated hub for aviation-related technical capabilities and knowledge development in the aviation sector, the 36-acre CIAL Aero Park will be dedicated to the nation by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on February 9. The Aero Park is envisioned as a centre of excellence, integrating aviation maintenance, training, and technical support services within a unified ecosystem, thereby expanding CIAL’s role well beyond conventional airport operations.

The Aero Park is being developed as an integrated ecosystem housing aviation-related organisations, aircraft hangars, aircraft parking facilities, specialised aviation training centres, and advanced technical support units. On the inauguration day, six projects valued at ₹101 crore will be commissioned under Phase I of the Aero Park.

“The first phase comprises the CIASL Business Centre—a premium co-working space, Technical Services Facility, and the country’s largest Aviation Breathing Apparatus Training Gallery,” said CIAL Managing Director Shri S. Suhas, IAS “. In addition, the country’s first Aviation Pressure-Fed Fire Fighting Facility, Kerala’s first covered aircraft parking hangar, and one of the kind, a state-of-the-art Underwater Rescue Training Centre will soon be established. Along with infrastructure development, our aim is to elevate CIAL to global standards in safety training.”

    CIASL Business Centre

One of the flagship components of the project is the CIASL Business Centre, developed at a cost of ₹30 crore. Spanning 40,000 sq. ft. across two floors, it stands among the few premium co-working facilities in the country operated directly by an airport company. The centre has the capacity to accommodate over 400 professionals at a time and provide workspace for approximately 30 companies.

Equipped with private office cabins, conference rooms, a seminar hall, multi cuisine restaurant, podcast studios, 24-hour power supply, Wi-Fi, high-speed internet, and ample parking area, the centre is designed as a modern business hub. Located very close to the International Terminal of Kochi airport, it offers strategic advantages for IT, banking, consultancy, aviation, and non-aviation companies by enabling seamless global connectivity, quicker operations for frequent travellers, and a quiet work environment away from city congestion. Proximity to the cargo terminal further benefits logistics-driven businesses.

    Modernised Technical Services Facility

Developed at a cost of ₹13 crore, the Technical Services Facility is aimed at improving safety standards and operational effectiveness through an integrated, data-driven maintenance control framework. The facility consolidates airport asset management, preventive maintenance, vendor coordination, and annual maintenance contract oversight within a single operational hub, leading to reduced downtime and more efficient performance tracking.

The facility will also oversee the procurement and deployment of advanced machinery and specialised vehicles for airside maintenance, reducing reliance on external agencies. Critical operations such as runway rubber removal, runway and apron cleaning, and waste management will be executed in-house, adhering to international engineering standards—an achievement unique even among major Indian airports.

Country’s Largest Aviation Breathing Apparatus Training Gallery

Built at a cost of ₹2 crore, the Aviation Breathing Apparatus (BA) Training Gallery is the largest facility of its kind in the country. Spanning 800 sq. ft., the maze-style smoke gallery allows firefighters to undergo realistic training in high-smoke and low-visibility conditions through two interconnected container-based structures.

A real-time CCTV monitoring and evaluation system allows instructors to track every movement, making it one of the most advanced training facilities in the country. While similar facilities exist in select national training centres, this is the first extensive maze-style BA gallery to be established within an airport campus, reinforcing CIAL’s commitment to passenger safety.

Kerala’s First Covered Aircraft Parking Hangar

Three major projects worth ₹56 crore will soon be completed under Phase One, the most significant being Kerala’s first covered aircraft parking facility, built at a cost of ₹45 crore. Designed to position Kochi as a major aircraft maintenance hub, the new hangar spans 53,800 sq. ft., with an additional 7,000 sq. ft. dedicated to offices, workshops, component repair, and non-destructive testing facilities.

With capacity to accommodate two narrow-body aircraft simultaneously, CIAL’s MRO capability will double. In addition, CIAL will uniquely offer a covered aircraft parking area of 3.5 lakh sq. ft., capable of parking 13 narrow-body aircraft at a time—a feature unmatched. The project is expected to generate over 400 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs.

Country’s First Live-Fire Aviation Training Facility

Another landmark initiative is the Aviation Pressure-Fed Fire Fighting Facility, being developed at a cost of ₹8 crore. Designed on the lines of an Airbus A320 aircraft and fuelled by eco-friendly LPG, the facility will offer controlled and repeatable live-fire training to flight crews for managing engine, wing, and wheel fires, without the generation of soot or smoke.

This is the first facility of its kind in India, positioning CIAL among the world’s leading airports in aviation safety training.

India’s First Underwater Rescue Training Centre Inside an Airport

CIAL will also soon begin construction of the country’s first underwater rescue training centre within an airport, at a cost of ₹3 crore. Designed to international standards, the facility will prepare emergency response teams to manage water-related emergencies near the airport.

The centre will include a six-metre-deep training pool for scuba diving, underwater search operations, and low-light rescue simulations, along with surface training areas focused on swimming skills and casualty evacuation. The initiative equips personnel with the physical and decision-making capabilities required during emergencies such as ditching and flooding.

The Aero Park represents a pioneering model for India’s aviation and industrial sectors. Future phases will include the CIAL IT Park and the ambitious Aero City project. “With the completion of these phases, Kochi will emerge as a global aviation hub offering everything from aircraft maintenance to advanced safety and technical training under one roof,” said S. Suhas IAS.
