Actress Remya Nambeesan, who started as a child artist and progressed in the industry by doing supporting roles, couldn’t flourish her career in M-town as expected but became a prominent actress in Tamil and Telugu cinema. The actress though was appraised for her performance in movies like ‘Lukka Chuppi’, ‘Chappa Kurish’, and ‘Left Right Left’, but found it hard to get opportunities in Mollywood after 2015.
The actress said that after her last Malayalam movie ‘Saigal Paadukayanu’ released in 2015, no one approached her with good offers. She said that the Tamil industry is different, where once established an actor won’t get discarded. Remya wonders why there aren’t opportunities in Malayalam like the ones in Tamil and Kannada.
One reason she feels for the lack of opportunities is that directors are preferring new actresses in every new movie, as newcomers wouldn’t demand wages and are content with what they get, unlike the experienced ones. Remya pointed out that almost ninety percent of heroines in upcoming Malayalam movies are newcomers, a reason to reduce the budget.
An active member of Women in Cinema Collective, Remya has always been vocal about gender discrimination in the film industry, a reason, a section of fans think, is causing Remya her chances in Mollywood.
