‘Karkuzhali’ Evokes the Musical Tradition of Kerala’s Jewish Women

‘Karkuzhali’, a captivating musical performance celebrating the vibrant musical heritage of Jewish women in Kerala was performed as part of the cultural events at the International Spice Routes Conference last evening.

The collection of Jewish songs, passed down orally in central Kerala, was compiled by the late Prof. Skaria Zacharia.

Renowned playback singer Resmi Sateesh performed these songs on stage during the event organised by the Muziris Heritage Projects and the Kerala Tourism Department.

Paravur Municipal Chairperson Ramesh Kurup released the book version of the collection at this event.

Among those present were Dr Ophira Gamliel from the University of Glasgow, UK; Managing Director of Muziris Projects Limited, Sharon Vand Academic Consultant for the International Spice Routes Conference, Prof MH Ilyas.

Dr Ophira, who has conducted extensive research on the Jewish musical tradition, spoke about its historical significance.

Sharon V emphasised the importance of preserving these timeless songs and introducing them to the new generation.

“Programmes like this are organised as part of the Spice Routes Conference to share Kerala’s rich history and culture with the world,” he said.

“These songs, preserved and passed down by Jewish women in Kerala for centuries, offer valuable insights into the social life and character of Kochi.”

The detailed descriptions in these songs of the lives of ordinary people in Kochi, as well as of environmental elements such as birds, animals, and even mosquitoes, enhance their cultural significance.
