KOCHI:
National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in association with Nansen Environmental Research Centre India conducted a workshop on ‘Vembanad Lake: Environmental Status and Threat”.
Dr P K Dinesh Kumar of NIO said that high tide and low tide at the river can be more effective if dredging is done without damaging the environment. This will helps to check pollution in the river to a certain extend. The threat to the inland water can be reduced if the rivers are able to hold more water.
Alappuzha Medical College Community Department Head Dr Sairu Philip said that the mosquito eggs which comes through the flood will not get destroyed for years in the changing climate. This will lead to infection of diseases like dengue.
These diseases could be controlled only with the help of action programmes and people’s participation. Public health could be ensured with the protection of living beings and environment, she added.
