MOSCOW:
On Friday, a key aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that the West and the U.S.-led NATO alliance were actively involved in planning Ukraine ‘s surprise attack on Russia ‘s Kursk region.
The incursion, which took place on August 6, saw thousands of Ukrainian troops cross Russia ‘s western border, representing a significant embarrassment for Putin’s military . While West ern powers, including the United States, denied prior knowledge and direct involvement, they confirmed that weaponry from Britain and the U.S. was used on Russia n soil.
In an interview with the Izvestia newspaper, Kremlin aide Nikolai Patrushev claimed, “The operation in the Kursk region was also planned with the participation of NATO and West ern special services,” although no evidence was presented. Patrushev implied that without West ern support, Kyiv would not have dared to venture into Russia n territory. His remarks hinted at a high risk of escalation , with potential implications for Ukraine ‘s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Despite the attack exposing vulnerabilities in Russia n defenses and altering the public narrative of the conflict , Russia n officials downplayed its significance, labelling it a Ukrainian “terrorist invasion.” Russia ‘s defense ministry released footage of a drone destroying a U.S.-made Stryker combat vehicle in the Kursk region. In Moscow, one lawmaker claimed that the West ern involvement in the incursion had inched the world closer to World War Three.
