Chennai: A running train which was carrying currency worth Rs 342 crore Salem in Tamil Nadu to Chennai was found broken into and some of the cash stolen, on Tuesday. It could not be ascertained how much cash was stolen.The crime is suspected to have been committed on the night of August 8.
The incident came to light when a hole on the roof of a coach, carrying 226 boxes of soiled currencies, was noticed on Tuesday morning at Chennai. Some of the boxes had been tampered with and the cash in them was missing.
The soiled currency valued at Rs 342 crore was being taken to Reserve Bank of India unit in Chennai. The cash was being transported with heavy security by a team of police headed by an Assistant Commissioner.
It is still a mystery how the thieves could drill the hole on the roof of the train which was running just below the high-volt electric line which supplied power.
