KOCHI:
Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Centre (STIC) in the CUSAT campus has recently installed Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/ Ionization Time of Flight (MALDI- TOF) Mass Spectrometer at a total cost of Rs. 200 Lakhs in its Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF) which is supported by Dept. of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India.
The SAIF is a National Facility, which was initiated in the year 2004. So far DST has provided funds for procuring 17 sophisticated instruments, which are being well utilized by research community in academic, in R& D labs and in Industries throughout the Country. In mass spectroscopy, MALDI is an ionization technique that uses laser energy absorbing matrix to create ions from large molecules with minimal fragmentation.
This technique is applied for analysis of bio-molecules such as DNA, proteins, peptides and sugars besides large organic molecules such as polymers, dendrimers and other macro molecules which tend to be fragile and fragment when ionized by more conventional ionization methods. This has got wide range of applications in Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymers, Microbiology, Parasitology, Medicine etc.
