KANNUR:
Minister for Industries, Sports and Youth Affairs E P Jayarajan, inaugurated the work on Mattanur Mini Stadium at nearby Pattannur on Thursday.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the ambitious project, Jayarajan said the policy of the government is to develop sports infrastructure across the State. Stadiums will come up at all the districts which will have international standards.
Apart from the district stadiums, indoor stadiums will also come up at municipalities and panchayats. The government will also take steps to popularise football in the state, the minister said. The works of the swimming pool with international standards will soon be started at Mattanur.
P P Noufal, president, Koodali panchayat, presided over the function. K V Sumesh, president, district panchayat, was the chief guest. K V Mohanan, vice-president, Iritti panchayat and K V Krishnan, chairman, standing committee (development), Koodali panchayat and Sanjayan Kumar, director, Sports and Youth Affairs spoke.
The stadium has been planned as part of the Government’s policy of developing sports infrastructure across the state, giving a thrust to sporting activities to the grass roots. The Mini Stadium was proposed in the 2016-17 modified budget, to be developed with funding from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The Mini Stadium will come up at 2.7 acre land of Koodali panchayat at a cost of Rs 4.07 crore.
The project is part of the government’s initiative of ramping up the sports infrastructure in village panchayats. The Mini Stadium will have a gallery, shops, changing rooms, toilets, mini football ground with synthetic turf and outdoor volleyball court.
KITCO Ltd will be constructing the stadium complex under the supervision of the Engineering Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.
