THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Indian Railways is a pioneer in ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission. Following the trails of Govt of India, the Cleanliness campaign that began on 02.10.2014 is progressively making a big leap receiving enthusiastic volunteering and support from rail users, employees, students, NGOs, Corporates and stake holders.
Southern Railway, a passenger-oriented zone, is making significant progress in enhancing the cleanliness parameters of its stations and trains. Theme based Swachh campaigns are organized throughout the year to provide a pleasing ambience at railway stations, spic ‘n span train interiors, zero-discharge tracks, hygienic catering, potable drinking water and clean railway colonies. Besides volunteering by staff, students and NGOs, Corporates are also roped in under CSR. Rail users are sensitized by organizing periodical campaigns and seminars. Better waste management is ensured through segregation of waste and provision of more dust bins aboard trains and at stations.
“Swachhta Hi Seva- Packhwara ” 2018
Indian Railways will be organizing a fortnight long special Cleanliness Campaign (Swachhta Hi Seva – Packhwara) this year from 15th September, 2018 to 2nd October, 2018 . Every day will entail a swachhta theme and activities will be undertaken at all levels in this connection as under:

15/09/2018 Swachch Awareness
The day will start by administering Swachhta Pledge to Railway employees and Cleaning staff. Railway staff and their families will be sensitised on the need to ensure cleanliness in the vicinity of their habitat. NukkadNataks, Workshops and training programmes will be organized with the help of NGOs, Religious bodies and School children will be conducted on the objectives and content of Swachhta Pakhwada.
16/09/2018 SwachhSamwad (Cleanliness dialogue/Public)
All Divisions will organize seminars on Sanitation and upkeep of railway stations by involving NGOs. Charitable institutions, Scouts & Guides, Unions, Passengers and employees to undertake cleanliness drive at their nearest railway stations. Painting & Poster competitions on the theme of cleanliness will be organized in schools.
17/09/2018 SwachhSamwad (Cleanliness dialougue/In-house)
Seminars and Workshops will be organized on Sanitation and upkeep of Railway Colonies, Rest Houses, Dormitories, Running Rooms, Hospital and Health Units, Colleges and Schools Displaying Anti-littering notices, awareness posters and slogans, Nukkad shows etc may be undertaken.
Awareness will be made through Public Announcement System and through posters encouraging more and more use of paperless travel in all classes of travel. Feedback may be taken from travelling pubic regarding cleanliness awareness including messages on 139.
18/09/2018 Swachh Stations(Clean Stations)
Special focus on Cleanliness at all A1 and A category stations will be undertaken. A campaign for ‘fill the dustbin’, ‘donate the dustbin’ will be taken up to spread awareness among the rail users.
19/09/2018: Swachh Stations (Clean Stations):
Special focus on intensive cleaning of all stations other than A1 and A category will be done. Plastic bottle crushers should be installed with CSR funding
All Efforts will be made to ensure at least one platform at important stations to be “zero waste”, i.e. litter-free. Inspection of the equipments using Solar Power will be undertaken.
20/09/2018: Swachh Railgaadi (Clean Train):
Intensive inspection/cleaning of popular trains will be undertaken by teams of officers and staff to ensure cleanliness onboard.
21/09/2018: Swachh Railgaadi (Clean Train):
Intensive inspection/cleaning of all other trains will be undertaken on this day.
All trains will be inspected in the washing lines, in railway yards and at stations. Train inspections will include checks on toilets and quality of linen. Suggestions/feedback will also be obtained from passengers and immediate action will be initiated.
22/09/2018: Seva Divas –Community day
Intensive drive will be undertaken to clean up and improve railway offices, Hospitals, Schools, Coaching Depots and Lobby’s.
NGOs Volunteers and Charitable organisation will be associated in mass cleanliness campaign and creating awareness against littering.
23/09/2018: Swachh Parisar: (Clean Work Places)
Intensive drive will be undertaken to clean up and improve railway offices, Hospitals, Schools, Coaching Depots and Lobbys. Required amenities in the circulating areas of station complexes be ensured and unauthorized encroachments removed. Cleaning of drains to be undertaken.
24/09/2018: Swachh Parisar: (Clean Residential Premises)
Residential Premises including Railway Colony, Retiring/Waiting Rooms, Rest Houses and Dormitories, Running Rooms etc., will be taken up for intensive cleaning on this day.
Intensive drive will be undertaken to clean up garbage. Participation under CSR be called for setting up of waste to energy plants in railway colonies. Beautification of premises by pruning of trees, plantation and landscaping will be undertaken
25/09/2018: Swachh Ahar:
On this day intensive cleaning of all canteens will be taken up.
26/09/2018: Swachh Ahar:
In continuation to station vending units, on this day intensive cleaning of all pantry cars in trains will be taken up.
All Catering Units will be directed to clean their premises and ensure that clean and hygienic food is served. Samples of food will be taken for checking and feedback of passengers obtained on the quality of food served.
27/09/2018: Swachh Neer (Clean Water):
Intensive inspection of all water installations including filter plants, sources of water supply, water taps for drinking water at stations as well as trains will be undertaken.
28/09/2018: Swachh Neer (Clean Water)
Intensive inspection of all water installations in offices, Railway colonies / Hospitals / Health Units / Schools will be taken up on this day.
It will be ensured that quality potable water is available and there is no shortage of water supply at any of passenger service locations like waiting rooms, retiring rooms, platforms, trains, etc. Inspection of water vending machines, water coolers should be undertaken for cleaning and sample checks will be conducted on quality of water. Efforts for setting up rain harvesting plants and recycling plants will be strengthened. It will be ensured that there is no problem of water stagnation anywhere in Railway premises.
29/09/2018: SwachhPrasadhan – Cleanling Toilets:
The day will be dedicated to intensive cleaning of all toilet blocks at railway stations, coaching depots, trains and surrounding areas. Water availability, leaking pipes, drainage systems will be paid attention to and broken items replaced wherever required. People will be encouraged to desist from open defecation in areas approaching railway stations or on tracks.
30/09/2018: Swachh Competition:
To inculcate a sense of healthy competition for cleaning commendation will be given to those units which are found perennially/regularly cleaned. Supervisors/staff working on cleaning activities will be suitably recognized.
01/10/2018: Review/Briefing:
On this day, the work carried out during the “’Pakhwara”” will be reviewed. Detailed reports of the campaign will be shared with Press/Media to encourage public awareness.
The swachhta Packhwara is being organised to ensure visible and tangible improvement in cleanliness in all railway premises ie. Stations, Trains, offices, Colonies, Workshops, Maintenance Depots, Hospitals etc., through intensive efforts in addition to the regular cleaning process.
