New Delhi: Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Culture in Narendra Mody’s Government, has retracted his advice to women tourists not to wear skirts after he realised that it raised eybrows.
The minister had, on Sunday, told the media that the government would issue an advisory to tourists suggesting that foreigners visiting India should avoid wearing skirts and going out alone at night.
“When tourists arrive, they will be given a welcome kit and a card with dos and don’ts… instructions… if they are in small places (sic), they should not roam around alone at night or wear skirts,” the minister had said while speaking to the media about the safety of tourists.
However, Sharma clarified today that he was referring only to religious places. “I am a father of two daughters…I would never tell women what they should wear or not. Our culture is Atithi Devobhava, ” Sharma said.
