Thiruvananthapuram: Petrol pumps will not sell fuel to two wheeler riders who do not wear helmets. The new policy will be implemented in Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram from August 1.
Transport Commissioner Tomin J Thachankary has given instructions to this effect. The decision will be implemented with the co-operation of fuel companies and dealers.
The authorities are aware that this action may be legally challenged and passengers are likely to resent. To plug this loophole, RTO enforcement squads will visit the pumps and levy fine on the spot from the helmetless riders who are belligerent.
Meanwhile, the new bill meant to curb helmet less ride is under consideration in the state assembly. It has provisions to slap a fine of upto Rs 2,500 and suspension of driving licence.
