THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
A galaxy of eminent personalities will inaugurate the ‘Multi-Event Campaign for a Plastic-Free India’ at 10.30 am at the Manaveeyam Veedhi in Vellayambalam on October 2.
The campaign organised by the city-based Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), along with various like-minded organisations, will witness personalities such as U V Jose, Director, Public Relations Department, Govt of Kerala; T P Sreenivasan, Former Ambassador; P Vijayan, IG of Police; Padma G Shankar; Arjuna Awardee Padmini Thomas; Sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman, Dr George Onakoor; Rev Dr A Dharmaraj Rasalam, Bishop, CSI South Kerala Diocese; among others. The event will go on till 2 PM.
Various programmes such as Poster exhibition on history and menace of plastics; Photo exhibition; Painting camp; Cultural performance by school and college students; Exhibition of alternatives to plastics; and Stalls by NGOs will be part of the Multi-Event Campaign. Besides, the directors of all National Institutes and Organisations will arrive at Manaveeyam Veedhi to pledge their solidarity by signing on the solidarity wall at the venue. As many as 100 NCC cadets from the All Girls Battalion will also arrive at the venue for the event.
CISSA is organising the Multi-Event Campaign along with RCE Thiruvananthapuram acknowledged by UNU; Nehru Yuvak Kendra; National Service Scheme; National Green Corps; WWF; Thanal; Friends of Marine life; C5; Santhigram; Dept. of Aquatic Biology, University of Kerala; SCT Engineering College; SusTera and Earth Foundation. The campaign coincides the announcement of a ban on single-use plastics (SUPs). Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for scrapping the use of single-use plastics (SUPs) by 2022 is set to launch with a ban on six items on 2nd October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
