New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked tax officials to increase the number of tax payers in India to 10 crore. Currently there are only 5.43 crore people in the taxpayer bases of the country.
Modi made this demand while addressing the annual conference of tax administrators in Delhi.
He pointed out the fact that as much as 92 per cent of direct tax revenue comes from TDS, collected mostly from salaried people, advance taxes and self assessment taxes.
He said that even though the Income Tax Department has 42,000 officers, only 8 per cent of the revenue comes from the scrutiny of returns.
