  • Memories that Fit in Your Palm; Meenu’s ‘Topography’ Stands Out at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale

By NE Reporter on December 24, 2025

    KOCHI:
Meenu James’ paintings transcend the confines of traditional canvases; they embody vivid memories that can be cradled in the palm of one’s hand.

This emerging artist from Koonammavu is showcasing her captivating artwork “Topography,” which depicts the evolving landscape of Varappuzha, at the Island Warehouse venue of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2025 that opened last week.

Meenu innovatively uses small pieces of wood as her canvas, bringing her creations to life on five distinct sides. Each piece serves as a visual representation and evokes a tactile sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of three-dimensional memories.

Using acrylic paint on both wood and glass, her artistry resonates deeply with viewers, stirring emotions even among those born in the 1990s.

Meenu, who grew up on the outskirts of Varappuzha, captures the significant changes in her homeland through her work, focusing on the landscapes and social fabric of Chennampally and Kottuvally from 1990 to 2000.

Behind the brushstrokes lies a powerful commentary on the crumbling fishing industry and the heartache of traditional communities compelled to abandon their roots due to the relentless encroachment of real estate interests.

Meenu James says that her artistic expression is a deeply personal experience. The encroaching developments have made her familiar surroundings unrecognisable. This issue is not unique to Varappuzha; instead, it reflects a broader loss of the unique character found in many areas of Ernakulam, she added.

Through her work, Meenu elegantly encapsulates the architectural beauty of homes that once defined the old Cochin landscape, now a rare sight.

When asked about her choice of compact surfaces for her art, she expressed her desire to preserve these cherished memories in a format that can be held in one’s hand.

The vibrant colours of her surroundings—the lush greenery, glistening waters, rich soil, and expansive skies—come alive within Meenu’s paintings. Elements such as the shifting hues of dawn and dusk, the tranquil presence of small fishing boats, traditional Chinese nets, and the silhouette of antiquated schools are intricately woven into the wooden canvases, creating a rich tapestry of life.

Meenu’s exhibition features not only her paintings but also her working notebook, offering a glimpse into her creative process. This display reveals how her observations and memories transform into visual stories, showcasing a blend of nostalgia and contemporary realities that capture the essence of the land.
