CHENNAI:
Makkal Needhi Maiam party celebrated India’s 73rd Independence Day at the Party’s head office in Chennai.
MNM General Secretary for Party Structure (North & East) A.G Maurya began the celebrations by hoisting the National Flag at the Party head office.
50% of Thamizh Nadu’s population reside in Urban areas. Village people have ‘Grama Sabhai’ to voice out their concerns and exercise their rights. A similar provision has been made for the people residing in Urban areas via ‘Area Sabhai’. Legal provision for the same was made via an amendment in the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Amendment) Act, 2010 – Act NO 35.
This amendment required that ‘Ward Sabhais’ be formed in every ward of Corporation and Municipality. It further required 5 to 10 ‘Area Sabhai’ to be formed within each ‘Ward Sabhai’. However, the required rules for the same have not been notified for the last 9 years and hence ‘Area Sabhai’ and ‘Ward Sabhai’ have not been implemented. This is preventing people of Urban areas from being a part of participatory Democracy.
It may be noted that‘Area Sabhai’ has been implemented in Kerala, Karnataka and West Bengal. Makkal Needhi Maiam party demands the Thamizh Nadu Government to prescribe the rules for ‘Area Sabhai’ and ‘Ward Sabhai’ immediately and ensure that 50% of the population of Thamizh Nadu also get to be a part of Participatory Democracy. MNM also enacted a mock ‘Area Sabhai’ today to emphasise its importance.
MNM General Secretary for Party Structure (North & East) A.G Maurya, MNM General Secretary for Propaganda R. Rangarajan, MNM State Executive Committee Member Gandhi Kannadasan and C.K.Kumaravel, Party District In-charges, other functionaries and members participated in the same. Makkal Needhi Maiam party’s functionaries and members participated in the Grama Sabhais held all over Thamizh Nadu. A.G Maurya, R. Rangarajan, Gandhi Kannadasan and C.K.Kumaravel participated in multiple Grama Sabhai meetings via Video Conferencing from the party Head Office.
