M K Kannan, Ex-MLA, assumed charge as the State general secretary of Communist Marxist Party (CMP).
Kannan was selected as the general secretary at the Central Council Meeting held at Kochi on Saturday. The new general secretary was appointed following the demise of K R Aravindakshan.
After assuming charge, Kannan told mediapersons that the 9th Party Congress will take a decision on merging with CPM. He said that the party started discussion in this regard and a policy decision will be taken at the Party Congress.
‘The policy of our party is to cooperate with all the communist parties and they should get united. There is no question of returning back to the UDF’, Kannan said.
The Central Council Meeting also decided to observe the 3rd death anniversary of M V Ragahvan with various programmes. A week long programme will be conducted at all the districts from November 2 to 9.
CMP has also decided to award the best ayurveda doctor in the State with a cash award of Rs one lakh. It will be handed at the death anniversary observance function scheduled to be held at Kannur on November 9.
MVR death anniversary will be observed with seminars and other programmes at all the districts. Branch level meetings will be held as part of the Party Congress soon, he added.
Kannan, who started his public life through students organisation, was brutally attacked by police during the strike called by transport workers in 1970. He also served jail term during the emergency period at Viyyur Central Jail.
He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Thrissur as a CPM representative. When CMP was formed in 1986, he was one of the leaders in the forefront of the party. He is also the leader of various trade unions.
