JAMMU:
A youth was killed and around 50 civilians were injured as security forces opened fire on protesters in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. The clash occurred near the encounter site where two militants were neutralised and a security personnel was injured earlier in the day.
A gunbattle broke out in Kundallan area after security forces launched a cordon and search operation following inputs about the possible presence of militants. An official said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire on the security forces, who retaliated. A jawan was injured in the exchange of fire with the militants, the official added.
He said a large number of civilians rushed towards the encounter site at Kundullan and started pelting stones at security personnel. On Monday, a militant was killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Kupwara district.
