KOCHI:
Milma Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union will disburse Rs 45 lakh as insurance claim to those farmers whose cows yield less milk owing to rise in atmospheric temperature, ERCMPU Chairman M.T. Jayan said today.
The money will be disbursed among the farmers owning 24,000 cows associated with the milk cooperatives in the districts of Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Kottayam at a premium of Rs 99 for the peak summer months of April and May this year.
The ERCMPU will meet half of the total expense of Rs 24,000 through premiums, and the rest of the money in the policy was pooled in as the share of beneficiaries.
The disbursal amount was based on the number of days when mercury soared above the prescribed limit. Aluva taluk marked the highest amount of Rs 2,000 per cow, followed by Chavakkad (Rs 1,000), Kunnamkulam and Idukki (Rs 400) and Peerumedu (Rs 200).
