The 44th Division of the Kochi Corporation has adopted a new method of waste management that can serve as a model and can be implemented in the whole Kerala.
The Green Cochin Mission is confident that, the Fort Kochi Carnival area will be a model as it would be clean in a single day. An innovative idea has occurred to the 44th division of Kochi Corporation to treat bio-waste at the source, and to sort and recycle the solid waste into 18 items. It emerged as the birth of a new era when it received the full support of Division Councilor George Nanattil. Justice CK Abdul Rahim, Chairman, Green Cochin Mission and Dr. TV Ravi, President, IMA Kochi branch inaugurated the event which was attended by representatives of 24 Residence Associations of the Division.
Cleaning workers of Kochi Corporation A.K. Abu, Abdul Quthoosh, P.A. Sainudeen and Shily Sherry were felicitated by Justice Devan Ramachandran. Corporation Mayor M. Anil Kumar, IMA Kochi Secretary Dr. Atul Joseph Manuel, Treasurer Dr. George Thukalan, Vice President; M.M. Haneesh, former President Dr. M.I Junaid Rahman and Green Kochi Mission Co-ordinator Dr. KP. Pradeep and Tajuddin, Senior Project Coordinator, Ecowe, a waste treatment company were also present.
The solid waste is classified into 18 types for recycling and treatment. This will significantly reduce the amount of waste currently being sent to the Brahmapuram waste plant. The Mayor stated that within the next 6 months, the Heal Kochi project will be implemented in all the divisions of the city, in collaboration with the Green Cochin Mission to make the city clean in the state as well as in the country.
IMA Kochi, Sanitation Mission, Haritha Kerala Mission, Justice Brigade, Department of Motor Vehicles, Architecture Association, KELSA, District Legal Services Authority, Child Line and Kochi Corporation along with more than 800 NSS volunteers from M.G University and Kerala Technical University participated. Volunteers explained to each household how to separate solid waste into 18 types as mentioned.
