SAN FRANCISCO:
Elon Musk’s “extremely hardcore” vision for Twitter seems to have manifested in conference-room sleeping quarters reminiscent of gloomy hotel rooms at the company’s recently shuttered headquarters.
On Monday, employees returning to work at the company’s San Francisco location were greeted by modest bedrooms, with old mattresses, drab curtains and giant conference-room telepresence monitors — a critical take on the Therm-a-Rest + sleeping bag situation upgrade performance by a Twitter employee in November. There is also a plant in one of the rooms.
A photo of a converted bedroom shared with forbes Filled with bright orange carpet, a wooden bedside table and what appears to be a queen bed, a table lamp and two office armchairs, it just begs for workplace collaboration.
A source said no announcement or context was provided to staff, and it was assumed the beds were for the remaining “hardcore” staff able to stay overnight in the office. “It’s not a good look,” he said. “This is another unsaid sign of disrespect. There is no discussion. Like, beds appeared.
Last month, CEO Elon Musk laid off thousands of employees who were or remain with the company on the condition that they work intensively under so-called “Twitter 2.0.” Since he took over as owner and CEO, Musk has fired at least half of Twitter’s employees, and more have left of their own volition.
It is unclear how many such bedroom pods exist, but the identity of the source, forbes Withholding for fear of retribution, estimated there were probably “four to eight per floor”, adding “they look comfortable.”
Another source who was similarly permitted anonymity said that several rooms were on one floor that were largely empty. They noticed that there was garbage lying in the dustbin of one of the rooms, which made it look like someone had stopped there. “People are already putting in late nights, so it makes sense to an extent,” said the source.
Meanwhile, several ex-employees, upset by what they say is the company going back on severance package agreements, have begun bringing multiple lawsuits and arbitration claims against Twitter. Contract workers also frustrated with Musk: On Monday, a group of janitors whose contract with Twitter was not renewed went on strike and demonstrated outside the office.
In mid-November, Musk tweeted that he would be working and sleeping at the corporate offices along Market Street “until the organization decides.” However, that tweet has since been deleted.
Kasturi has claimed gold on company properties before – she once Tweeted in 2018 about “sleeping at the factory”, referring to the Tesla factory in nearby Fremont, California.
Twitter’s CEO did not respond to a request for comment, nor did its communications department, which appears to have completely disbanded since Musk’s acquisition.
