Latest studies conducted by the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge show that eating dark chocolate may gain you better sleep. The magnesium present in dark chocolate helps to control the circadian cycle of the body.
The circadian cycle or the sleep-wake cycle is called as our biological clock and controls functions like body temperature, sleeping and waking. This is the reason why we wake up after getting sufficient sleep. The stressful day-to-day life has altered sleeping habits in people.
Internal clocks are equally essential to all living organisms and can be the cause of health or ill-health of an individual. Studies reveal that magnesium helps the cells to work efficiently in the burning of energy, converting it into nutrients as per the biological necessity of the cell. It was found that the magnesium level oscillates during the circadian cycle and this rise and fall during oscillation causes the cell to preserve its energy.
Nuts, leafy vegetables, beans, banana, yogurt etc. are also known to have good magnesium content.
The findings were published in the journal, Nature.
