KOCHI:
The efforts of Cochin University of Science and Technology to acquire global standards has received a boost with its inclusion in the short list for ‘Institutions of Eminence’ status by the Central Ministry of Human Resources
Development.
According to the UGC guidelines, the institutions which finds a place in top 50 of the ranking under the National Institutional Ranking Framework of 2016 or 2017 or in top 500 in ranking by internationally recognized ranking frameworks such as Times Higher Education World University Rankings or QS or SJTU (Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University) are eligible for inclusion in the programme. Cusat had been ranked 30 th in NIRF Ranking in 2016. The shortlisted institutions include 19 IITs, 13 NITs, 13 IIMs,
4 IISERs, 12 Central Universities, 32 State Universities, 11 Public Deemed to be Universities and two other INIs. Kerala University is the only other University from the state included in the shortlist. The 10 chosen institutions from the list will receive an additional grant of Rs. 1000 crores over a period of five years for the purpose of achieving global standards.
Such institutions will be free from the usual regulatory mechanisms in adopting the course of action to reach their aim of matching world standard. Freedom to admit additional foreign students equal to maximum 30% of domestic students, to offer course within a programme, offer degree in new areas besides emphasizing multi disciplinary initiatives, high quality research, global best practices, foreign collaboration etc are a few of the highlights of the
benefits entailing the selection as ‘Institutions of Eminence’.
