KOCHI:
A combined Indo-French project titled “Impact of monsoon convection on the tropical tropopauselayer and climate” undertaken by Cochin University of Science and Technology and Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD), France has received the grade of excellence from the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA) scientific counsel.
The project was approved by CEFIPRA in 2016 and provided financial support for three years. Dr K Mohankumar from CUSAT Advanced centre for atmospheric radar research (ACARR) was the principal scientist on the Indian side and his French counterpart was Prof. Bernad Legras from LMD France. The project was aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the transport processes across the tropical tropopause region during monsoon convection.
Studies involved analysis of unique flight observations, satellite data and Lagrangian transport model simulations. This project has been instrumental in fostering long-term collaboration between LMD France and CUSAT and has elevated the reputation of Cochin university to an international level. This project also had Dr. Ajil Kottayil from ACARR as the joint collaborator on the Indian side, Dr. Silvia Bucci on the French side and Sivan C, as a Ph.D fellow working on this project.
