THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
In an effort aimed at popularising and creating awareness on the wide-ranging benefits of the jack fruit right from the panchayat level, the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) has joined hands with the Kalliyoor Grama Panchayath to organise the Kalliyoor Jack Fruit Festival 2017 at the Government Model Higher Secondary School, Punnamoodu, on August 19 and 20.
The festival will have more than 200 varieties of products made from Jack Fruit on display and sale. Besides, an exhibition on Jack Fruit and the advantages of consuming the fruit would be organised as part of the two-day festival.
The festival which will get underway on August 19 morning will be inaugurated by V Lathakumari, Member, District Panchayath, Thiruvananthapuram, at a function presided over by R Jayalakshmi, President , Grama Panchayath, Kalliyoor.
The training programme on making products from Jack Fruit will be inaugurated by J Girija, Chairperson, Standing Committee – Health, Block Panchayath, Nemom. A seminar on the many advantages of Jack Fruit and making of Jack Fruit products, which will be organised on August 20 between 10 am and 1 pm, will be inaugurated by S Kumar, Vice President, Grama Panchayath, Kalliyoor.
“The Kalliyoor Jack Fruit Festival 2017 will be unique in such a way that a variety of products made from Jack fruit would be on display and will be available on sale. This apart, jack fruit farmers in and around Kalliyoor will also get a unique platform to display the products they have made from the fruit they have harvested in their backyards, said Dr C Suresh Kumar, General Secretary, CISSA.
The festival, which will be open to all free of cost, also will have jack fruit saplings to be distributed to all those who would want them. The festival is being positioned as a unique platform in Cissa’s and Kalliyoor Panchayath’s efforts aimed at bringing the advantages of Jack Fruit and products made from it to the limelight.
