THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
The city-based Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) celebrated World Environment Day 2019 by organizing a seminar, in association with the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, and supported by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE).
The seminar, organized at the Kerala University Campus in Karyavattam, had ‘Pollution Reduction for Combating Climate Change’ as its focal theme. Three lectures on related topics by eminent professionals, and an inter-collegiate quiz on environment were part of the day’s activities.
Dr. Katharine A Owens, Associate Professor, University of Hartford, USA, made a presentation on Marine Debris with special reference to plastic waste in water bodies. Dr. Sureshkumar C, Consultant, Govt. Taluk Hospital, Parassala, enlightened the audience on various types of air pollution and their impact on human health. He also stressed on the need for extended product responsibility in reducing air pollution. Er. Suresh Babu B.V, Accredited Energy Auditor, BEE, Govt. of India, related pollution with various types of energy used in homes, educational institutions and industries.
As many as 16 teams from across Kerala took part in the Inter-Collegiate Quiz competition. The event concluded with the prize distribution for the winners of the quiz competition.
