Calicut FC Launches ‘Lady Beacons’: India’s First Women’s Supporter Group in Football

For a first in the sports history of India, Calicut Football Club (CFC) today launched “Lady Beacons”, an exclusive Women’s Supporter Group (WSG) which will cheer the club from the stands in a unified voice, signalling a major shift in their stadium participation.

The initiative, unveiled in Kozhikode, is intended to build an inclusive and empowering community of women who support Calicut FC, while celebrating the region’s rich football heritage and progressive spirit.

By pioneering this movement, the club positions itself alongside global leaders like Bristol City and Arsenal Women.

Calicut FC was the winner of the inaugural edition of Super League Kerala (SLK) in 2024, which is conducted on the pattern of Indian Super League (ISL). Six teams from different districts participate in the league. The second edition starts on October 2 in Kozhikode.

“Football has always belonged to Kerala. With the launch of our Women’s Supporter Group, we make sure it belongs to women equally. This is not just about fandom, it’s about pride, equality, and representation,” said V K Mathews, owner of Calicut FC and Executive Chairman, IBS Group.

While fan-led efforts exist across India, this is the first time that a professional Indian club has officially created a platform for women fans, not just to cheer louder, but to change the culture of football itself.

“Bringing women to the forefront has always been core to IBS Group’s culture, and diversity is reflected in all our businesses and initiatives. Through this initiative, we aim to bring more women and children into football and ensure our home stadium is truly women-friendly. This is about creating safer, more inclusive spaces and ensuring that football truly becomes a Game For All,” said Hannah Mathews, Co-Owner, Calicut FC.

Women are now becoming a vital part of India’s football audience, yet support culture remains largely male-dominated. The WSG gives female fans a platform where their voices and experiences are celebrated, while also creating a safe, welcoming environment that breaks barriers to stadium participation.

Beyond inclusivity, WSG strengthens community bonds, as women bring families into the stands, reinforcing CFC’s identity as a community-driven, family club.
