NEW DELHI:
In a major crackdown, the CBI has uncovered one of India’s biggest medical college scams, involving a vast network of senior officials, educationists, middlemen, and self-styled godman Rawatpura Sarkar. The scam spans multiple states and exposes deep-rooted corruption in the medical education approval system.
Top names like former UGC Chairman and current TISS Chancellor D P Singh, Index Medical College owner Suresh Singh Bhadoria, and former IFS officer Sanjay Shukla have been named in the FIR. So far, only Atul Tiwari, a director at Sri Rawatpura Sarkar Institute in Raipur, has been arrested.
The probe began in Raipur with a ?55 lakh bribe-for-inspection case and has since revealed ghost faculty, fake inspections, leaked NMC files, and bribes routed through hawala and official banking channels to secure illegal approvals for over 40 medical colleges across the country.
The CBI alleges that senior officials leaked confidential data, while dummy staff and fake patients were arranged during inspections. Funds from bribes were even used to build a ?75 lakh temple in Rajasthan.
Institutions in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are under the scanner, with colleges like Father Colombo Institute in Warangal reportedly paying over ?4 crore for fake clearances.
Rawatpura Sarkar’s inclusion in the FIR has reignited scrutiny over his alleged misuse of political links and past controversies involving land encroachment and unapproved institutions. More arrests and revelations are expected as the investigation deepens.
