THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) here is all set to launch a couple of pioneering projects on October 17, marking the commencement of the year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations of the institute that has made significant contributions in the field of scientific research and development.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh will inaugurate the Golden Jubilee celebrations at CSIR-NIIST campus at Pappanamcode in the city at 3pm.
Dr N Kalaiselvi, Secretary, DSIR and Director General, CSIR, will be the Guest of Honour at the function, to be presided over by Dr C. Anandharamakrishnan, Director of CSIR-NIIST.
On the occasion, Dr Singh will lay the foundation stone for the Centre of Excellence in Ayurveda Research on the campus and also inaugurate the Centre of Excellence in Performance Chemicals and Sustainable Polymers. Both are milestone initiatives of CSIR-NIIST that has been consistently ranked as one of the top R&D institutions in the country.
CSIR-NIIST, which completes 50 years of its existence in October 2025, is a constituent laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
As part of the celebrations, the Minister will release CSIR-NIIST Golden Jubilee Year Book along with the Golden Jubilee Stamp. Dr Singh will also inaugurate the CSIR-NIIST startup expo to be held on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony where MoUs for technology transfers will be exchanged.
Dr K V Radhakrishnan, Chief Scientist, CSIR-NIIST, and Dr P Nishy, Chief Scientist, CSIR-NIIST, will also attend.
Established as the Industrial Testing and Research Laboratory under Government of Kerala, the institution became part of CSIR as Regional Research Laboratory (RRL) in 1975. It was renamed CSIR-NIIST in 2007, and since then has grown as a leading national institution with global visibility with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
“Over the years, CSIR-NIIST has proved its unparalleled excellence in science, technology and innovation. The outcome of the outstanding work done by the scientific community associated with the institution over the decades has made a big social and economic impact, percolating down to the grassroots,” Dr Anandharamakrishnan said.
Also, CSIR-NIIST has been recognized for its contributions in areas such as spice & oilseeds processing, building materials, premium quality aluminium castings, processing and value addition of clays and minerals, organic photonic materials and environmental monitoring and remediation.
CSIR-NIIST focuses on achieving a balance between high quality, globally competitive science and technology leading to processes and products. To achieve this, a linkage between CSIR-NIIST and industries has been initiated which will strengthen translational research in line with the vision of the Government of India.
