Berlin: Novak Djokovic was selected as the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ in the Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony held in Berlin, Germany on Monday. Djokovic had won the same title in 2012 and ’15 and held the trophy for the third time. His achievements in the Wimbledon, Australian and the US Open Grand Slams finally earned him the Laureus title for the second consecutive time. He also reached the finals in the French Open.
Tennis champion Serena Williams was awarded the ‘Sportswoman of the Year’. The trophy also fetched her the specialty of being a ten-time nominee and a third time winner of the same title. New Zealand’s Rugby team ‘All Blacks’ was selected as the ‘Team of the Year’; while its member Dan Carter was entitled with ‘Comeback of the Year’ for his spectacular return following an injury in 2011.
Called as the ‘Oscar of Sports’ the Laureus World Sports Awards was started in 2000 and is given to remarkable sports personalities based on their achievements in the previous year.
