THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
As part of the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action’s (CISSA) ongoing Low Carbon School Campus Programme aiming to make school campuses carbon-neutral, a report on the process for Manacaud Govt. Girls Vocational Higher Secondary School was presented. Er.K. M. Dharesan Unnithan handed over the GOLD rated carbon Certificate to the school authorities at the inaugural ceremony.
Students play a vital role in making households and educational institutions carbon neutral said Er.K. M. Dharesan Unnithan. The project report was presented by Er. Suresh Babu BV, Director, Energy & Clean Technologies Division, CISSA. Presenting the report, he stated that the students should take the initiative for creating a carbon-neutral campus.
Dr.C.K Peethambaran, Director, Agriculture Division, CISSA delivered the keynote address. The schools should follow the example set forward by Bhutan that got carbon negative status, he pointed out. Headmistress Vinithakumari N; Deputy Headmaster, Sajikumar K G; Lijo G L; Sulaiman and Sushama spoke at the event.
Low Carbon School Campus Programme was conducted by CISSA in three schools in Thiruvananthapuram district with the support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE).
Girls HSS, Venganoor; Bharatheeya Vidyapeedom Central School, Parassala and Govt Vocational & HSS for Girls, Manacaud are the three schools in which the programme was implemented. CISSA stated that the concept of low carbon initiative has reached nearly 4476 households in Thiruvananthapuram District through the staff and students of these schools. CISSA with the support of the Department of Environment and Climate change, Govt. of Kerala, has also implemented a project on Estimating Carbon Footprint in School Campuses and Creation of Low Carbon School Campus Plans for Ten Schools in Munnar, Idukki District.
