  • IIITM-K Workshop Focuses on Machine Learning in Cyber Security

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
    Possibilities and challenges of Machine Learning in cyber security came up for in-depth analyses at a three-day workshop held by the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala (IIITM-K) here.

    The workshop on “Machine Learning for Cyber Security” was organized in association with Center for Research and Innovation in Cyber Threat Resilience (CRICTR), ACM Trivandrum Professional Chapter and IEEE Communication Society Kerala Chapter recently at the IIITM-K campus.

    Dr. Saji Gopinath, Director, IIITM-K, inaugurated the event, which served as a venue for researchers and professionals to address challenges in cyber security and explore how to tackle them by applying machine learning and deep learning models.

    The programme showcased insightful sessions by eminent speakers from renowned institutions, including Dr. Rajkumar Buyya, Director, Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems (CLOUDS) Laboratory, School of Computing and Information Systems, University of Melbourne, Australia; Dr. Shrisha Rao, IIIT Bangalore; Dr. Suneet Kumar Gupta, Bennett University, Greater Noida; and Vinayakumar R, Data Science and Cognitive Security Practitioner.

    The speakers shared their experiences in the field of cyber security and guided the participants through the emerging trends and advancements with emphasize on research and applications of machine learning approaches and deep learning techniques.

    A talk on “Research@ IIITM-K” by the research scholars to familiarize with the current research activities of the institute was held on the first day. It covered recent developments in diverse areas, including smart surveillance, vulnerability analysis, social network security, application of biometrics in internet of things (IoT) security, intrusion detection, trust management, authorship analysis, wireless sensor networks, image forensics and blockchain technology.

    This session was followed by a lecture by Dr. Srisha Rao on the topic “Safety Issues in Cyber-Physical Systems,” which discussed the safety issues and potential risks in various fields. Dr. Suneet Kumar Gupta conducted a hands-on-session on hand-written digit classification using artificial neural network and convolutional networks.

    On the second day, Dr. Rajkumar Buyya gave a lecture on the novel concepts in IoT paradigm connecting the concepts of Cloud/Fog computing and blockchain. The rest of the sessions were handled by the expert team from Amrita led by  Vinayakumar explaining various use cases of cyber security and why machine learning is essential for cyber security.
