THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Lending the energy of sports to reconstruct the state after the August floods, this year’s Trivandrum Marathon being held tomorrow will bank on the theme ‘Run for Kerala – Run to Rebuild’.
The December 1 event, being organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) under the state government, adopts an all-encompassing approach by bringing people of different age groups into sports. The marathon, fashioned in four phases, will begin with a two-km Family Fun Run.
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs EP Jayarajan will flag off the Family Run from Manaveeyam Street here at 8 pm. As for the marathon competitions, they are divided into full (42.19 km) and half (21.09 km). Besides, there’s a 10-km road race. Southern Air Command Air Vice Marshall B Chandrasekhar will flag off this section at midnight.
The competitions come with attractive prize monies totalling Rs 10 lakh. An amount of Rs 1 lakh would be given to the winner of the Full Marathon, Rs 50,000 to Half Marathon winner and Rs 20,000 to the 10-km marathon winner. Separate competitions will be held for men and women.
For participating in the events, one has to make contributions to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF). For the Family Run it is Rs 500 per family, while it is Rs 600 per person for the 10-km marathon, Rs 800 for half marathon and Rs 1,000 for full marathon. The marathon is being organised in association with Trivandrum Runners Club.
