Thiruvananthapuram: Former athlete Anju Bobby George resigned from the Kerala State Sports Council on Wednesday, contrary to her earlier stand that she would not resign.
She announced her resignation at a much publicised press meet in Thiruvananthapuram. 12 other members of the Council also announced their resignation. Anju demanded a vigilance investigation into the corruption in the sports council during the last ten years. Obviously, she was targetting the office bearers of the sports council under the LDF Government led by Achuthanandan years ago.
Her brother, whose appointment as a coach at the Sports Council became controversial, also resigned his job.
Anju resigned in the wake of the allegations allegedly raised by the new sports minister E P Jayarajan.
Anju, a nominee of the Syro-Malabar Catholic lobby in the former UDF government led by Oommen Chandy, was appointed President of the Sports Council seven months before the elections despite the fact that she lived outside Kerala.
Meanwhile, media reported that she would be rewarded with a new post under the Khelo India project of the central government.
Interestingly, Khelo India is the new name given by the Modi Government to the old sports project Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan launched by the Congress-led UPA Government. The Congress party had criticised its new nomenclature.
