THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
A renowned orthopedic specialist has provided guidelines for completing the rituals of Attukal Pongala, where thousands of women cook on the city streets for the goddess, with ease.
Dr Harish Chandran said that if some small precautions are taken, even those who have had their knees replaced can perform Pongala smoothly.
With careful planning, women devotees can celebrate the Attukal Pongala festival with less pain and strain.
For women who practice religion, it is crucial to participate despite any physical limitations they may face.
He said many elderly individuals may experience knee pain and joint discomfort. Knee braces can be somewhat helpful.
However, sitting on your knees should be limited to a maximum of five minutes. Additionally, walking and stretching your arms and legs can also be beneficial.
Resting after returning home from the rituals is just as crucial as offering Pongala. One common issue is the numbness in the legs.
Soaking your feet alternately in hot and cold water with crystal salt can be very relaxing and can also help increase blood flow to the legs, according to Dr Harish Chandran.
He emphasized that drinking plenty of water and offering Pongala in open spaces are the most effective ways to enjoy the festival with ease. Staying hydrated helps prevent fainting, dizziness, and fatigue.
Getting a good night’s sleep the day before the event is also essential. Individuals with asthma should offer Pongala in an open area whenever possible.
Wearing a mask is crucial for preventing airborne diseases and smoke inhalation. It’s also important to take precautions due to the potential fire risk.
Dr Harish Chandran is a prominent sports medicine practitioner in the country.
