Mary Kavita Dominic, final year student of the Five Year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Course of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, has bagged the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship this year at the University of Oxford, U.K. She is the first recipient of the scholarship from NUALS. An avid debater, sh
e has set multiple records for the University. She also dabbles in creative writing. At Oxford, Mary will read for the Bachelor of Civil Law, with special focus on international criminal law and comparative
human rights. Born to Dominic Chacko, an Engineer and Tessy Dominic, a housewife, Mary Kavita Dominic hails from Kadavanthra, Kochi.
Established in 1903, the Rhodes Scholarship is an international postgraduate award for students to study at the University of Oxford. Notable previous Rhodes scholars include Bill Clinton, James William Fulbright, Howard Florey, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Dr. Girish Karnad. From India, five students are selected every year for the Rhodes Scholarship based on their intellect, character, leadership and commitment to service.
The selection process involves a preliminary shortlisting based on the candidate’s CV, Personal Statement and References. Around 100 odd students are selected for the preliminary interview from which another eighteen qualify to the final interview.
