Lionel Messi, Argentina’s all-time goal scorer and the five-time FIFA World Player of the Year, has announced his retirement from international football after Argentina lost
to Chile in the final of the Copa America.
Messi was heartbroken after he missed a spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out.
Messi’s dramatic announcement followed Argentina’s third loss in a major final since 2014.
“It’s not meant for me. For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion,” the 29-year-old said after defeat by Chile at the Copa America.
