KOCHI:
Understanding Gudham, Spice Trade Edition: A Visual Documentation Walk will be conducted for adults from 7 am to 10 am on February 14. It is facilitated by Community 40 that documents the immediate past and the constantly evolving layers of Mattancherry’s trading heritage, under ABC Art Room Workshop of the Kochi Biennale Foundation. December 2024 marks the fifth edition of this series.
The route of the walk is from Old Mattancherry Boat Jetty to Bazaar Road to Dutch Palace, Jew Street and Warehouse in Kochangadi.
Each site becomes both a listening and witnessing space and participants can pause at 12 to 13 carefully identified locations and document the moments.
This edition goes deeper into the spice warehouse research, offering an elaborated storytelling experience that weaves together the history of Mattancherry. At its heart lies the interweaving of history and observation—where architecture, trade, migration, memory, and conflict come together to shape Kochi’s layered identity as a port city.
