Indian Meteorological Society Award to Dr Abhilash S

Dr Abhilash S, Assistant Professor, Department of Atmospheric Science, Cusat has bagged Meteorological Society award for Weather and Climate services. The award carries a citation and cash prize, which was presented by ISRO Chairman A. S. Kiran Kumar during the international symposium held at Space Application Centre, ISRO, Ahmadabad.
Dr. Abhilash. S and team has made significant contribution in the development of forecasting strategies for weather and monsoon intra-seasonal forecasting over India region. He has made the first attempt in assimilating radar reflectivity and radial velocity from Indian Doppler Weather Radar observations in the 3DVAR system of MM5 and WRF modeling System. For his contribution in the study of the impact of Indian radar data assimilation on the short range forecasting of Convective storms, he was bestowed with prestigious SAARC scientist medal in the year 2007.
The unique extended range prediction system developed by Dr. Abhilash is adopted by India Meteorological Department for producing operational weather outlook for 10-20 days in advance. This work is pursued under
national Monsoon Mission programme. He was working as an Associate Scientist with Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune and University of Miami, USA, prior to join Cusat.
