KOCHI:
The fifth edition of Rotary Olympics for Special Education Students, ROSES2017, will be inaugurated by Rajiv Pillai on 18th November at U.C. College Ground, Aluva.
Dronacharya K P Thomas and Rajas Thomas, President Idukki District Athletic Association, will lead the Olympics which is going to be conducted by Rotary International 3201 for the upbringing of special school children. Joseph G Abraham, Arjuna Award Winner, and Floyd Emmanuel Ligera, winner of National award for exceptional achievements 2017 for the outstanding performance in drums will also join the Olympics to encourage and motivate the participating children.
Being conducted over the past four years, ROSES aims to design a platform through sports to educate and communicate the dignity and value of students with special needs by giving them opportunities to showcase their abilities and athletic skills. Last year marked a participation of 1500 children from 35 special schools. ‘Wings of Love’ is another such initiative by the rotary club by which they arranges a flight journey from Nedumbassery to Thiruvananthapuram for children from special schools.
In this season, more than 1000 selected children will be participating from various special schools. The valedictory session will be inaugurated by District Governor Vinod K. Kutty. He thereafter will do the prize distribution for the winners. Apart from Champions trophy and certificates, there will be gifts for all the participating children.
Rotary has arranged the facilities for travel, accommodation, food and medical help of the students participating in Roses. The family members of the rotary club members will also be there to help the children. The rotary clubs of Cochin International Airport, Cochin West and Cochin Tricity will also join hands to conduct Roses, said Bibu Punnuran, Roses Secretary, Rajas Thomas, Roses sports co-ordinator, Ajithkumar Gopinath, president of Rotary Club Cochin West, Arun Jacob, president of the Rotary Club of Tricity and M.K Rejith, past president of Rotary Club of Cochin West in the press meet.
