Kochi: Cardinal George Alenchery, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, which is a constituent of the the Catholic Church in India, has come out in the open in support of the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party’s ( BJP) move to bring Uniform Civil Code in India.
” The uniform civil code would be useful for strengthening the unity of the country and its people,” Alenchery said.
BJP had included the implementation of Uniform Civil Code in its election manifesto. The move is targeted at the Muslim community in the country.
Cardinal Alenchery had made news two days after he was anointed to the post with his comment in support of Italy in the case of the Italian Marines who shot dead two fishermen off Kerala coast.
The comment by the cardinal had caused an uproar in India and ‘India Today’ in a screaming headlines asked: ‘Is cardinal Alencherry more loyal to Italy than Kerala?’
