KOCHI:
Sharing the same lineage and united with the passion of music, sibling singers K.V Shanmathuran and Nisso Sajeev from Ernakulam offered a bouquet of songs for the patients during the weekly ‘Arts and Medicine’ programme at the Government General Hospital on Wednesday.
Shanmathuran, a sales officer at a Tyre company at Ernakulam, also pursues his passion for music whenever he gets an opportunity. He had worked with Kalabhavan Junior troupe and ‘Ragalayam Strings’ band and was the first runner up at the ‘VAWA’, a reality show held at Vypeen in 2015.
Nisso, sister of Shanmathuran, is a music teacher at a reputed school. She was a former singer at Cochin Kalabhavan and later had performed for SACS Orchestra, Koonammavu, and Voice of Melody, Fort Kochi.
The performance began with a prayer song, followed by fourteen Malayalam melodies. Two duets by the siblings and a devotional song by guest singer Manikandan imparted the show an added tempo. ‘En Mandahasam Chandrikayayenkil Ennum Pournami,’ ‘Kadambari Pushpa Sadassil,’ ‘ Ezhuswarangal,’ ‘Nalikerathinte Nattilenikkoru’ were among the nostalgic numbers that enthralled the listeners at the hospital.
“Music in its natural course will be of therapeutic use. To be of solace to patients in a hospital will be an ideal thing to bring a change to the general well-being of a person. Music can do wonders , it can help a person calm down and help retain one’s composure when pushed to extremes in stressful conditions; My sister and I are a team and try to be in sync while rendering songs on a stage” , said Shanmathuran.
The programme, a joint initiative of the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra, aims to provide solace to patients through therapeutic music. The 236th edition of the musical extravaganza was almost entirely of Malayalam songs, except for a Tamil devotional song.
The popular therapeutic music show which began in 2014 has showcased various professional and amateur artists as well as celebrities in its steady musical journey. The audience has been fair and had welcomed the show with open arms.
