Thiruvananthapuram: Kavalam Narayana Panicker, doyen of Malayalam theatre, poet and lyricist passed away at his home in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.He was 88.
It was Kavalam who brought Kerala theatre to the limelight at the international level with his experiments and ethnic plays. His much acclaimed play is ‘Avanavan Kadamba’. This along wwith his ‘Daivathar’ and ‘Sakshi’, are milestones in Malayalam theatre.
He also left an imprint in the film industry as a lyricist. H wrote lyrics for films like Rathinirvedam, Vadakakkoru Hrudayam, Thampu, Kummatti, Padayottam, Chillu, Sooryan, Vidaparaum Munpe, Venal and Thampuratti. ‘Kaithappoovin kannikurumpil thottu thottilla’ is one among the chartbuster songs he created.
