CHENNAI:
The Winter Session of Parliament has ended with the passing of an Act that questions the secular fabric of our Constitution. The central Government has passed the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act using the majority that it has in Parliament.
The whole Nation has risen against this unacceptable act. Makkal Needhi Maiam party President Kamal Haasan had opposed this bill by saying, “what gumption, to think that only one sect of people will “qualify” to live in India.” The United Nations and countries like the USA and England have expressed their discontent about this act.
The Nation is already in distress due to the fall of our economy, shortage of essential commodities and the pathetic state of women safety. At this juncture the Government has chosen to pass an act that goes against the fundamentals of our Indian Constitution.
It seems like the Central Government is unperturbed by the people’s opposition, the complications that will arise in our international relations due to this decision or the implications of this decision on the peace and harmony of the society.
We have seen in the past that this Government is stubborn and will not retract its decisions no matter what.
Makkal Needhi Maiam is aware that the petitions to this Government will go unanswered. The party has taken the last resort of people’s confidence and has hence approached the only place where justice prevails – the Supreme Court.
A.G. Mourya (Retired IPS Officer) – General Secretary (Organisation – North & East), Makkal Needhi Maiam, represented the party and filled a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court today against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 . Makkal Needhi Maiam party and its President will face the legal battles to ensure that this law is not enacted.
