KOZHIKODE:
India’s premier Management School, The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) and Sage Publications have come together to release authoritative works by expert IIMK faculty members primed for the new normal in a post-Covid era. The lead book – Karma Sutras: Leadership and Wisdom in Uncertain Times – of the four part-series has been authored by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode who is also an accomplished author of best-selling books. Intensely motivating, the ideas in the book stem from real-life narratives of various thought-leaders and the author’s 25 years of experience as a scholar and institution builder.
The other books in the IIMK Kozhikode-Sage Series are:
Impactful Communication: Communicate to Conquer – Prof. Deepa Sethi
Strategy Huddle: Management Lessons from Sports – Prof. Deepak Dhayanithy
Accounting Simplified –Prof. Rachappa Shette
Speaking on the launch Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, the series editor of the four-book series, said “The series has key business and practical insights for management graduates and first-time managers alike. Penned by the distinguished faculty of the IIM Kozhikode, the books in this series are succinct, illustrative and are replete with real life examples. These books will endow new managers with business expertise and empower them as they navigate a volatile and highly competitive corporate world.”
Prof. Chatterjee’s previous published work includes 17 books, including Leading Consciously and Timeless Leadership that have been translated in several international languages. Sharing further insights to his latest work, which is replete with scientific and ancient wisdom for modern managers, he added “Karma Sutras is about Decoding Habits and Exploring Potential in Uncertain Times. ‘The chains of habit are too light to be felt until they’re too heavy to be broken’ is how ancient Rishis of India would have described the law of karma. In my book, ‘Karma Sutras’, I describe karma, not as fate but as mindsets that we unconsciously acquire through repeated impressions of thought and patterns of action. A coffee addict is imprisoned by her habitual entrenchment in coffee-karma. In order to break free, she has to learn to break her karmic habituation” In his foreword to the book, Peter M. Senge (MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts) “Debashis Chatterjee’s vision of offering ancient insights in a way that makes them understandable to contemporary managers could not be timely. This is a precious book. I hope it finds its way into the hands of readers who are as committed to the future as is the author.”
Prof. Deepa Sethi, Chairperson PGP-LSM, also shared how her Impactful Communication: Communicate to Conquerwork will be pivotal for managers to deliver impactful communication, “Communication is the lifeblood of existence, be it any living being or any organization. Communication can make or break a decision, transaction, purpose or motive. Therefore, it is imperative to gain proficiency in it. Impactful Communication is based on the ideology, “More in Less” and emphasizes quality over quantity. The long-term goal of communication is to maintain and nurture relationships, whether at home or at the workplace or in social circles. This book is an effort to conquer hearts and minds through impactful communication. It is an amalgamation of topics beginning with the basic tenets of communication and encompasses the latest in the field which includes the social media, artificial intelligence and also dwells upon mindfulness in communication along with understanding of the self in the process.”
Prof. Deepak Dhayanithy, Associate Professor, summarised his work Strategy Huddle: Management Lessons from Sports as “Be it the Olympic motto (Citius, Altius, Fortius* meaning Faster, Higher, Stronger) or strategic management, it’s all about superior performance. This book examines this synergistically: examining (a) strategy manifest in a wide variety of sports (innovation, internal organization, external environment, blue ocean, strategic learning, leadership, behavioral strategy) and (b) contemporary topics that have great management significance (resource dependence and battle of the sexes). Readers would develop an appreciation of the fertile, common ground between strategic management and sports – and hopefully, a love for it.”
Prof. Rachappa Shette, Associate Professor, recounting his experience on writing the book Accounting Simplified said “This book is about understanding and interpretation of balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement using a simple managerial approach. The book also covers cost management for maximizing the sales and profitability of a company. I would like to thank my dear students and friends for helping me in developing a simple method of teaching accounting in last 20 years”.
