  • From Stopover to Stay: How the Biennale is Redrawing Kochi’s Tourism Map

By NE Reporter on January 9, 2026

    KOCHI:

Once a pleasant pause on Kerala’s tourist trail, Kochi is now emerging as a destination in its own right, driven in no small measure by the growing cultural and economic pull of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB).

What was earlier a brief two-night stop before travellers moved on to backwaters or beaches has steadily transformed into a longer, more deliberate stay. The Biennale has altered the city’s tourism profile, drawing visitors who arrive not just to see, but to engage, with art, history, neighbourhoods and local life.

As footfalls rise and visitor behaviour shifts, the impact is being felt well beyond gallery spaces, signalling a quiet but significant boost to Kochi’s tourism economy and a recalibration of what cultural travel in Kerala can mean.

    S. Swaminathan, Director of Dravidian Trails, says the Biennale has changed how long tourists stay in Kochi. “Foreign visitors usually spend two nights here, but once they hear about the Biennale, they almost always extend their trip by a day or two,” he says. “That’s two extra days of revenue per visitor.”

The interest goes beyond holidaymakers. “We’re also getting enquiries from consulate and embassy officials asking for customised arrangements,” he notes, adding that the Biennale is now seen internationally as a must-visit cultural event.

The economic impact is widespread. “Even small homestays are fully booked during the Biennale,” Swaminathan says. Many international artists choose to stay in these homes for one to three months, often on modest budgets, turning neighbourhoods into temporary creative hubs.

“We received a six-night booking from Switzerland directly because of a Biennale-themed mailer we launched. The Biennale gives Fort Kochi a refined, distinctive aura that no other event creates,” he adds. Based on current demand, he expects at least a 10 per cent rise in international arrivals this season.

Dr Venu V, Chairperson of the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF), is happy that the sixth edition of the Biennale has triggered a rise in visitors to Kochi. He noted that taking in the Biennale in its entirety would require at least three days, as this edition includes several new venues.

“This will add to the overall experience, especially with the city’s brand-new Water Metro,” Venu said. “The KBF is working with the travel industry to help stakeholders better recognise the Biennale’s business potential. The hospitality sector, from homestays to resorts, also stands to benefit significantly during the Biennale season.”

According to Shibani Vig, Director of WeGoBond, the Biennale has sparked unprecedented interest among travellers. “We curated a holiday that combines the Biennale with Theyyam, and it sold out in just 48 hours, something we’ve never seen before,” she said.

“There’s immense curiosity, even among people who are only vaguely familiar with the Biennale. We even had demand for a second trip, but hotel availability in February made it unfeasible, and we now have a long waiting list. Two American travellers have also signed up. It’s clear that Kochi is a major draw this season,” said Shibani Vig, who has launched a tour package themed around the Kochi Biennale and Theyyam in Kannur.

The Biennale’s return has clearly changed how travellers plan their Kochi trips. Ranju Joseph, Director of Pioneer Personalized Holidays, says the festival has shifted the city’s image from a two-night stop to a longer, experience-driven destination.

“Visitors now stay extra days to explore the Biennale and to connect with Kochi’s art and stories,” he says. This trend spans leisure tourists, international art lovers and even diplomats, many of whom are timing their travel around the festival.

But rising demand brings pressure. Long-stay visitors are tightening inventory, and Biennale-focused packages are drawing a surge of overseas interest. “We’re in a high-demand, low-inventory phase,” Joseph explains. Recent Kerala Tourism roadshows in Europe confirmed this, with strong early interest in Biennale travel, but also challenges such as soaring tariffs, fluctuating availability, and the need for consistent service quality.

“During peak Biennale days, operators will have to plan earlier and think more creatively,” he says. “Rooms in Fort Kochi become scarce, rates change quickly, and maintaining quality becomes critical.”

What makes this moment significant is how a contemporary art festival has reshaped Kochi’s tourism story. Once known mainly for its heritage charm, the city is now a cultural destination where global art and everyday life intersect. The Biennale has not only boosted visibility but added real cultural depth, spreading economic opportunity across neighbourhoods.

For the tourism industry, the Biennale has proved to be a blessing. For travellers, it offers the chance to experience Kochi not as a stopover, but as a city where art and daily life blend, making a longer stay feel natural.
