New Delhi: Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPM Kerala State Secretary, has said that the state government led by LDF will file a new affidavit in the Supreme Court regarding the entry of women into Sabarimala Temple in tune with the earlier stand taken by the LDF way back in 2007.
The then ruling LDF government had told Supreme court in 2007 that restricting the entry of a particular section of women on the basis of age was discriminatory and should be discontinued.
Travancore Devaswam Board had also supported the government’s view.
The previous UDF Government led by Congress had withdrawn the pro-entry affidavit filed by the previous LDF government and wanted restrictions on women continued at Sabarimala. “The restriction on women between the age of 10 and 50 has been prevailing in Sabarimala from time immemorial. This is in keeping with the unique ‘pratishta sangalp’ or idol concept of the temple, ” the UDF Government’s affidavit said.
On Monday, the current LDF government’s counsel told the Supreme Court that the State government stood by the earlier government’s stand.
The three-judge bench presided over by Justice Dipak Misra asked Senior advocate V Giri, appearing for the state government, “Are you sure you appear for the state?” Giri maintained that as of now the Kerala government supported the affidavit.
