  • Biennale Music: Maharaja’s Music Department Alumni Association Enthralls Patients

By NE Reporter on July 26, 2017

    KOCHI:
Singers of the Maharaja’s College Music Department Alumni Association sent the patients at the Government General Hospital in Ernakulam in rapturous delight today as they came out with an exhilarating performance at the ‘Arts and Medicine’ show organised by the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF).
Singers Abhijith Yogi, Sanjay Chandran, Prem Prathap and Athira Janakan were accompanied by music director Sejo John; Pooja, Head of the Department; Guest Lecturers Sajna and Sindhu; and students from the college at the programme, which aims to provide solace to the hospital patients through therapeutic music.
Abhijith, who has an experience of a decade in the musical field, started the proceedings with ‘Ye Mere Humsafar’ from the 1988 Hindi blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Sanjay followed it up with ‘Melle Melle’ from the 1992 movie Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam. He was followed by Prem with the Malayalam song, ‘Anuragini Itha En’ from the 1985 movie Oru Kudakkeezhil.
Next in line was Athira, who belted out the evergreen melody, ‘Mynaagam’. Overall, the team members sang under a dozen songs.
A group song, a duet and a chain song, apart from the solos, perked up the mood of the audience comprising patients, bystanders and medical staff, evoking generous applause from them.
‘Arts and Medicine’, the weekly music programme at the General Hospital that began in 2014, has witnessed performances by both amateur and professional musicians representing various musical cultures and genres, catering to the wide-ranging musical tastes of the audiences.
“Music in hospitals is an uplifting experience for patients, medical staff and visitors alike. It brings joy and positivity for the listeners,” said Abhijith, the vocalist from Thrissur who features prominently on major TV channels.
‘Arts and Medicine’ is an initiative of the KBF in association with Mehboob Memorial Orchestra and is sponsored by CAFS (Casino Air Caterers & Flight Services). The all-Wednesday programme has clocked 180 episodes so far.
